Profile:
Marcelo Garcia goes beyond "icon" in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He is known as much for his happy, always smiling demeanor as he is his technical grappling game. His x-guard, arm drags, and north-south chokes are his hallmarks, but his coach Fabio Gurgel pushes "Marcelinho" to continue developing new weapons to keep his opponents on their toes. A member of the the Alliance BJJ lineage under Romero 'Jacaré' Cavalcanti, he's an Abu Dhabi champion.
He was scheduled to make his debut in MMA at the May 19 2007 Gracie Fighting Championships show but he withdrew to focus on the ADCC submission grappling championships. In October 2007 he made his MMA debut but lost when the doctors stopped the fight after a cut was opened on his forehead.
In late November 2007 Marcelo Garcia left New York City where he taught alongside fellow Alliance team member Fabio Clemente and appears to have relocated to Florida.
