Profile: Randy Couture is considered to be the most charismatic and widely liked mixed martial arts fighter the sport has had in its brief history.

Randy Couture wrestled as a youth and entered the Navy where he trained in boxing. He was later recruited by Coach Mark Cody to wrestle at Oklahoma State, where he was a finalist two years in a row.

Couture began his MMA career in 1997 at UFC 13. Over the course of his career he had fights against well-known MMA fighters like Tito Ortiz and Josh Barnett.

In 2006 Randy Couture announced his retirement from MMA fighting after losing to Chuck Liddell for the second time. During his time away from MMA competition, he took part in the Professional Submission League's X-Mission, where he entered a submission grappling match against Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion Jacare. Their match ended in a draw.

Shortly thereafter, Randy Couture announced he'd be returning to active MMA fighting, and that his first opponent would be the UFC heavyweight champion at the time, Tim Sylvia. Couture would go on to beat Sylvia and regain the UFC heavyweight title.

In October 2007 Randy Couture announced his resignation from the Ultimate Fighting Championship, citing disagreements about compensation and a desire to compete against Fedor Emelianenko, who signed a deal to fight in the M-1 promotion.
