Profile:
Terry Martin holds a graduate degree in clinical psychology, like fellow mixed martial arts fighter Jeff Monson. He hails from Chicago.
Terry Martin was born in Maywood, Illinois, a small suburb ten
minutes outisde of Chicago. As a child, Terry found himself in
trouble a lot. Before the age of 10, Terry had been in and out of jail
a number of times for fighting, but things began to change when an
officer spotted Terry fighting outside and, instead of taking him in,
decided to take Terry to a local boxing gym.
The gym offered a place for Terry to participate in organized fights but did not take him from the streets. Terry still spent many afternoons on the street and was caught up in the gang life in his community. Although Terry continued to train in boxing and wrestling, Terry found himself the victim of a close-range shooting.
At the age of 17, Terry was shot five times. He spent the summer in the hospital recouperating from wounds to his arm, back, leg and buttocks. At this point, Terry decided to break out of the gang life and turn his life around. After years of being told that he would never amount to anything, Terry found a way to make something of himself through obtaining an education.
Terry went back to school and finished high school, the first of his family to do. He then immediately enrolled at Northern Illinois University. While working on a degree in pyschology, Terry was a member of Northern Illinois’ Division I wrestling team. The determination to change still burned strong after Terry received his degree, so Terry decided to enroll in a Masters program at Concordia University.
As he furthered his education, Terry continued to wrestling and soon learned of a relatively new sport that combined boxing, wrestling, and martial arts: Mixed Martial Arts. Despite his passion for this new sport, he never allowed his training to infringe upon his studies. While preparing for his victorious fight against Juan Rivera in Ultimate Fighting Championship 67, Terry completed his Master’s thesis on children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, this did not prevent Terry from earning his first UFC victory with a 14 second first round technical knock-out.
Terry has continued to pursue both his UFC career and education. He is now working on completing his doctoral thesis to obtain a PhD in Clinical Pyschology from Adler School of Professional Pyschology. Terry has also continued his success in the ring, winning as an underdog in UFC 71 against Ivan Salaverry with another first round technical knock-out. Terry eagerly awaits his next challenge, but, until that time, it is back to the books and training.
