Vitor Belfort is one of the first MMA fighters to make a name in North America. His second professional fight took place in UFC 12. Over the years he's beaten fighters like Wanderlei Silva, Heath Herring, and Yoshiki Takahashi. He's also lost to such fighters as Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, and Dan Henderson.
Belfort's sister Priscila was kidnapped in January 2004. No news was heard of her fate until the summer of 2007 when a woman identified as Elaine Paiva confessed to being involved in Priscilla's abduction and murder. It is said that this event had a lasting effect on Vitor Belfort, and more than one MMA pundit has claimed that this event marked a turning point in Belfort's fighting record, leading to a decline in his performance.
Vitor Belfort is deeply religious, and makes a point of promoting the Christian faith.
