Mike Fowler

Country of origin: United States United States

Height: 5'9"

Weight: 170

Record: 0-0-0

Profile: Mike Fowler began training Brazilian jiu-jitsu in August 2001 at a Lloyd Irvin satellite school in Virginia Beach. At approximately the same time mixed martial arts heavyweight Brandon Vera joined the same school and was a white belt in BJJ alongside Fowler.

About six months into training he moved from Virginia Beach to Maryland to train with Lloyd Irvin. Fowler was the third American to get his black belt in under four years, with the first being BJ Penn, and the second being Lloyd Irvin.

After gaining his black belt he moved to San Diego, where he taught briefly at City Boxing, he moved to Guam in 2007. Mike Fowler was the first black belt in BJJ to teach full time in Guam and he remains there today.

In the prestigious 2007 Abu Dhabi submission grappling championship Mike Fowler eliminated Renzo Gracie and Saulo Ribeiro.

In 2006 he had a controversial encounter with fellow BJJ black belt Daniel Moraes at the BJJ world championships in Rio de Janeiro. When Moraes was in danger from being submitted by an armbar, it is reported that he slammed Fowler to escape the submission, an act that is supposed to be penalized by disqualification. Moraes was not penalized and went on to win the match.

Mike Fowler does have a couple amateur mixed martial arts fights behind him, the first of which he won by triangle after training BJJ for one week.
